It all began with the team of the “Zeller Oldies”, a group of hockey players “in the prime of their lives” who did not want to quit hockey after their active careers. Founded in 1980 the “EK Zeller Oldies” wanted to play for fun and participated in regional leagues as well as in the once carried out Austria wide senior championship, which they could win in impressive manner.

But Austria was not enough for the Oldies of Zell am See and they developed a keen interest in travelling. So they visited South Africa in 1991 and played against the South African national team, they stopped by in the United States for several times and they could participate in the world famous “Snoopy Tournament” in California. They did not simply participate – they could also win their age group two times and brought a silver medal home once. In 2001 the next journey led the Oldies to Australia where they built an Austrian-Canadian team for a tournament. And this traveling is still going on as the Oldies travel every 2 years somewhere in the world to play some friendship games against local teams.

All this travelling established great hockey friendships all over the world and the next logical step for the Oldies was to organize their very own hockey tournament in Zell am See. The “Austrian Icehockey Classic” was born. In 2021 the tournament, which is staged every other year, will take place for the 16th time! And the history is far from over!
